Adopt A Muskox

Despite their name, muskox are members of the goat family. They’re an ancient species of arctic mammal with a thick outer coat consisting of long (up to 36 inches) guard hairs that cover a dense underfur known as qiviut. Qiviut is considered to be one of the warmest materials in the world.

In the summer of 2010, a muskox calf was rescued from an oil facility in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The staff of several companies in the area assisted with the capture of the orphaned female muskox and worked with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game to relocate the calf to the AWCC. After the successful relocation, and the AWCC took the animal in, nursing her to health and working very closely with Large Animal Research Station (LARS) through the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Artemis comes to the AWCC after being rescued near Endicott, an oil field close to Prudhoe Bay. Artemis’s rescue was a true team effort involving the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, BP, Hilcorp, Alaska Clean Seas (ACS), Shared Services, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. After a grizzly bear killed two adult muskoxen within Artemis’ grazing herd, the rest of the herd scattered and Artemis was left alone. Alaska Clean Seas later found Artemis hunkering down under a raised utility building. After getting permission from ADF&G to go ahead with a rescue, they proceeded with grabbing this feisty little gal who was particularly energetic despite having been on her own for 3 days. She was then transported with BP’s air charter Shared Services out of Deadhorse, Alaska, and flown to Anchorage. Artemis now has a permanent home here at the AWCC.

*Artemis is available for adoption because she is a calf.
