The past few months have been an exciting one for the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center! We have welcomed new members to the family; four wood bison calves, a female reindeer calf, a male muskox calf and a male porcupette that was rescued from Juneau. The first male wood bison calf was born Sunday, April 22, to an experienced bison mom and has been named by the male winner of the Bison Run Wild 5K. The firstborn male wood bison calf is Moofasa! Say “hi” to Moofasa next time you visit. Since the first-born calf to now, AWCC is proud to announce we have a total of four wood bison calves! The female reindeer calf was born Wednesday, April 25, to mother Holly. The calf has been named, Hermione and can be seen sticking very close to mom.

Our first muskox calf of the season was born on May 14th. The male calf was born to mother, Susitna. He weighed in at 20 pounds at birth and has been rapidly gaining weight. Animal Care staff named him after the popular Mexican food dip, Guacamole or Guac for short. Guac is currently not on display. He will be cared for by Animal Care staff until he reaches an appropriate size to be reunited with the herd.

Twix, our orphaned male porcupine was placed in the care of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center on May 10th. Twix was orphaned in Juneau with his umbilical cord still attached, and he required immediate care. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game contacted the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and he was immediately transported to us to be cared for. The name Twix continues the candy theme for our resident porcupines. Twix is currently not on display and will receive special care from Animal Care staff until he is large enough to be in his own enclosure.
